Λίγοι είναι οι καλλιτέχνες που μπορούν να υποστηρίξουν ότι όντως άλλαξαν τον κόσμο προς το καλύτερο. Ο Sidney Poitier ήταν ένας από αυτούς που το έκαναν, έμπρακτα, μέσα από την ριζοσπαστική του παρουσία στο αμερικάνικο σινεμά από τα πρώτα μεταπολεμικά χρόνια μετά τον Β’ Παγκόσμιο Πόλεμο μέχρι και την αυγή του 21ου αιώνα. Και την Παρασκευή που μας πέρασε μαθεύτηκε πως έφυγε από τη ζωή, πλήρης ημερών, σε ηλικία 94 ετών. O Poitier υπήρξε ο πρώτος μαύρος ηθοποιός που κέρδισε Όσκαρ Α’ Ανδρικού Ρόλου, για την ερμηνεία του στο Lillies of the Field του 1963. Σχεδόν 40 χρόνια αργότερα, το 2001, παρέλαβε κι ένα Academy Honorary Award για τη συνολική προσφορά του στο σινεμά, η οποία μεταξύ άλλων περιλάμβανε ιστορικούς ρόλους σαν αυτούς που έπαιξε στο Blackboard Jungle, το The Defiant Ones, το Porgy and Bess, το A Raisin in the Sun, το To Sir, with Love, το Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner και το In the Heat of the Night. Εκτός αυτών, ο Poitier υπήρξε επίσης σκηνοθέτης, συγγραφέας και διπλωμάτης, ενώ ήταν και μία από τις σημαντικότερες προσωπικότητες που πρωτοστάτησαν στους αγώνες για τα κοινωνικά και πολιτικά δικαιώματα κατά τις δεκαετίες του ’50 και του ’60, όντας ενεργός ακτιβιστής σε όλες τις μεγάλες διεκδικήσεις των μαύρων κοινοτήτων κατά το μεγαλύτερο μέρος της ζωής του.
