Από το 1970 κι έπειτα, ο Sutherland άφησε το στίγμα του σε μερικές από τις σπουδαιότερες ταινίες της δεκαετίας, όπως το M*A*S*H, το Klute, το Don’t Look Now, το The Day of the Locust, το 1900 και το Invasion of the Body Snatchers. Διατηρώντας μια υπερβολικά αξιοπρεπή πορεία τις επόμενες δεκαετίες, και παραμένοντας πολιτικά ενεργός ήδη από τον αγώνα ενάντια στον πόλεμο στο Βιετνάμ, στον 21ο αιώνα ο Sutherland έγινε εκ νέου γνωστός σε ένα mainstream ακροατήριο, παίζοντας σε box office hits όπως το The Italian Job και το Pride & Prejudice, ενώ η πιτσιρικαρία τον γνώρισε καλά μέσα από τον σταθερό ρόλο του στο The Hunger Games franchise από το 2012 μέχρι το 2015.
